SURVEYING AND TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING LAB
![]() |
The Surveying and Transportation laboratory infrastructure includes different kinds of surveying instruments and transportation software, which are installed in Civil Computer Cluster. Among Surveying instruments are levelling equipment, theodolites and total stations. The surveying instruments are used in CE204: surveying course, which is typically taken by undergraduates at sophomore level. The surveying instruments have also been used for research within the |

department and by researchers at Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute. Dr. Andersen coordinates surveying equipment usage for instruction and research purposes.
Among software in the cluster used by transportation students and for transportation instruction and research are AutoCAD2002, AutoCAD Land Development, AutoCAD Map, AutoCAD CAD Overlay, Eagle Point, Synchro and Sim Traffic from Trafficware, WinPAS (Pavement Analysis for Windows), PCAPAV and Highway Capacity Software (HCS2002). Transportation graduate students and faculty also have access to GIS software such as IDRISI and ESRI’s Arcview and Arcinfo. Much of transportation laboratory work is done using software and involves data collection and use of simulation, CAD and GIS. A plan for acquiring JAMAR traffic data collectors and related software is underway. There is also interest in acquiring Microstation and Geopak Licenses.
